Northwest team makes statement

PEGGY PEATTIE / Union-Tribune
Bishop O'Dowd's Brandon Ashley (left) and Richard Longruss surround San Diego High's Adam Lacey as the players try to control the ball. The Oakland school defeated the Cavers 51-30 for third place in National Division of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic.

State's fourth-ranked team blasts local No. 1

Santa Ana Mater Dei is making a pretty solid case for being the No. 1 girls basketball team in the state.

The Monarchs (13-0) mowed down Bishop's – the top-ranked team in the San Diego Section – 78-43 in last night's WNBA Division final of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic at El Capitan High.

More High School Basketball

Army-Navy forward is 'chairman of the board': Derrick Buchanan's heart may be in Chicago, but the senior forward is the heartbeat of the Army-Navy Academy basketball team. On offensive and defensive ends of the court, Buchanan sets the tone for a Warriors team that is looking to win its first San Diego Section title in more than two decades.

El Capitan senior is a three-sport standout: It's a sight to see – 6-foot-4, 210-pound Jon Molzen wakeboarding around El Capitan Reservoir. The three-sport standout cuts quite a swath. But Molzen is used to making waves. The El Capitan High senior has earned more than a half-dozen varsity letters in football, basketball and track, yet some believe Molzen has not realized his potential.

St. Augustine senior 'a more mature player': St. Augustine High senior Stephon Lamar has a new look this season, but that's not the only change. Lamar's approach to basketball has been renewed.

Shootout transcends basketball: St. Augustine High is hosting a basketball tournament this week on its tiny North Park campus. That's not uncommon this time of year, but the Augustinian Shootout is about more than basketball.

Maranatha drawing attention: Before the basketball season started, much of the focus was on a small high school in the East County. It might not be a bad idea to look north, too. With Chen Cai leading the way with 26 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots, Maranatha Christian buried Lincoln 70-48 last night to move into the championship game of the Governors Division of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic.

First loss tough for Matadors: LAKESIDE – For a few seconds longer than a quarter, the Mount Miguel Matadors proved they could hang with Santa Ana Mater Dei – the No. 1-ranked girls basketball team in the state.

A triple-double threat at El Cap: Ashley Duffy has been a statistical wizard throughout her four-year high school career. The El Capitan senior guard, who came into this week's SoCal Holiday Prep Classic tournament averaging 28 points per game, is proving she can do more than just score.

Young Falcons soar from 3-point land: Sophomore Max Heller and his Torrey Pines High teammates did a different kind of weight training leading into their final practice ahead of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament.

Torrey Pines event draws a full house: John Olive normally starts receiving entries for the MaxPreps Holiday Classic in the spring. Activity really picks up in the summer and fall.

Eastlake's 'engine of the team' is a commanding presence: Xander always dominated little Trevon, and that's just the way it was going to be. Xander was a year older, a year wiser and a year bigger, and he used every opportunity to make sure Trevon knew it.

Sultan senior is a scorer: Santana High senior basketball standout Jamie Elias runs the gamut when considering what she might pursue as a career. Elias, a member of the Sultans' homecoming court, said she might become a surgical nurse or a broadcast journalist.

Mt. Carmel's Doremus determined to succeed: Maggie Doremus hates to lose, no matter the competition. “I'm a really competitive person even when I'm playing cards or board games,” said Doremus, who has helped Mt. Carmel High win three San Diego Section titles in basketball and two in softball. “I don't like to lose. It's just my attitude.”

Hoover 10th-grader has nice soph touch: It's easy to forget Angelo Chol is just a 16-year-old sophomore. When you're 6-feet-9 and record a triple-double against a quality team to lead your school to the Otay Ranch/Mater Dei Holiday Invitational basketball championship, you look more like a senior.

Leaf takes charge; Foothills takes title: Foothills Christian guard Troy Leaf beat the odds last night at Grossmont High. More than that, the 6-foot-3 junior stunned Rancho Bernardo over the final 3:20 of the Grossmont Winter Classic championship basketball game.

LC Canyon boys savor Kiwanis championship: La Costa Canyon is going to cause some shuffling in the boys basketball Top 10 rankings. The No. 5 Mavericks completed a four-game sweep in the Kiwanis Tournament last night, edging previously undefeated Torrey Pines 49-45 for the championship at Serra High.

A second chance at Mater Dei: Soulijah Evans missed it all. The teammates with whom she had played since she was 7. The crowd's cheers after one of her trademark blocked shots. The winning.

Reaching for a higher power: Damon Williams has words etched into his skin with ink. The same words are burned into his mind with passion.

Taking a break: Sherika Miller is restless. So far this basketball season, the West Hills High forward has been on the outside looking in. Miller's shooting hand was covered by a bright green cast on which friends and teammates scribbled tons of inside jokes.

A long ranger: Granite Hills High senior Dean Miller is one of those tweeners. He has above-average talent in two sports but no college commitment in either.

'He's a true leader': For as long as Mark Hills has played basketball, he has been a point guard – the field general on the floor.

El Camino banks on center for success: As a freshman call-up for the basketball playoffs, Luke Evans savored playing the final minutes of two one-sided victories for El Camino High.

Shooting for a championship: Walk into the Mission Bay High gym as the Buccaneers gear up for the basketball season and one moment is frozen in time on the scoreboard.

Edwards hopes to help Hilltop High continue streak: Anthony Edwards waited his turn. He watched last year while teammates turned in another dominant regular season for the Hilltop High basketball squad. Edwards contributed off the bench as the Lancers cruised to a fourth straight undefeated South Bay League title.

Cathedral Catholic star is Harvard-bound: Last year's Cathedral Catholic High girls basketball players will be remembered as champions.

Monte Vista senior excels in two sports: Basketball is Geoff Hartman's game, but baseball could be his future. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Monte Vista High senior has the skill to play college basketball: Chico State has shown interest.

Bishop's standout ready to rebound after knee injury: Inga Orekhova knew better. Doctors were telling her the injury to her left knee might be a severe sprain, but Orekhova had torn her right ACL before and recognized the pain.

Girls Basketball Players To Watch:

Girls Basketball Top 10:

Tiny school, big plans: It has been more than 30 years since a local high school boys basketball team has posted a perfect record. Since before the state playoffs were initiated.

Boys basketball players to watch:

Boys basketball Top 10:

'She's a raw talent': Don't call Emily Osga a multisport athlete. The Patrick Henry High senior is more an omnisport athlete.

Northwestern lands Bishop's standout: Inga Orekhova, a highly recruited basketball player from The Bishop's School, has accepted a scholarship offer to Northwestern University, saying she will make it official during the early signing period in November.

Order on the court: When Richard Davila suited up for his first game as a basketball official in 1999, one word described his emotions. “Scared,” he said. “I didn't have time to think.”

High school players spend summer on the court: Sweat poured down the face of a clearly exhausted Ariana Elegado as the La Jolla Country Day junior-to-be pondered her answer to the question.

Youth movement: Chris Brisco has been a varsity and junior varsity boys basketball coach at Point Loma High long enough to know what he thinks is needed to turn around the Pointers program.

More than 300 teams expected at basketball tourney: The San Diego Classic high school girls basketball tournament is scheduled July 17-20. Competition is expected to feature more than 300 teams in four divisions playing at sites across the region. The tournament, the largest of its kind in the nation, is in its 22nd year and includes many of the top teams in the Western states.

Pepperdine lands Mission Hills' Darby: Mission Hills High's Taylor Darby will continue his basketball career at Pepperdine University.

Cathedral's boys basketball program gets a fresh face: Cathedral Catholic High Athletic Director Dave Smola said the school decided to “go young” when hiring a boys basketball coach.

Toreros land Cavers guard: When Patrick McCollom moved to San Diego from Washington state with his grandparents, he didn't know what to expect.

High school rebounders to move back during free throws: Rebounders on free-throw attempts will be positioned along the foul lane three feet farther from the basket during high school basketball games next season.

Basketball honors for LJCD senior: La Jolla Country Day basketball player Janae Fulcher was selected second-team All-State yesterday by CalHiSports.com.

Horizon's Withey chosen All-State: As a sophomore, Jeff Withey began making an impact on California high school basketball when he was a pivotal member of Horizon High's state Division IV championship team. But not until yesterday did he join the elite.

Rancho Bernardo hires basketball coach: Varsity assistant Jim Choe has been named head boys basketball coach at Rancho Bernardo High.

Four years, four stars: For four years, Horizon's Jeff Withey and La Jolla Country Day's Janae Fulcher have dominated basketball in this state.
