Carlos the Jackal ordered back to French court

ASSOCIATED PRESS

8:32 a.m. October 6, 2008

PARIS – A French judicial official says the convicted Venezuelan terrorist known as Carlos the Jackal has been ordered back to court over four deadly bombings in 1982 and 1983.

Ilich Ramirez Sanchez – alias Carlos – is serving a life sentence for killing two French secret agents and an alleged informer in 1975.

He is now also accused of having a role in two 1982 bombings – on a Paris-Toulouse train and outside the Paris office of Arab-language newspaper al-Watan – and is suspected in two other train bombings on Dec. 31, 1983.

The judicial official says the 58-year-old Carlos can appeal the decision, and that no trial date has been set. The official is not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke Monday on condition of anonymity.
