Dad mistakenly shoots son on Calif. hunting trip

ASSOCIATED PRESS

11:57 a.m. October 7, 2008

MINERAL – A Marysville teenager was shot in the hip by his father during a weekend hunting accident in Northern California.

Tehama County Sheriff Clay Parker says 16-year-old Justin McFarlane was hunting with his father on Sunday at Morgan Summit in Mineral, about 130 miles north of Sacramento.

The father, 50-year-old Daniel McFarlane, was unloading a rifle when it fired. His son was sitting in the pickup truck when he was struck.

The younger man was flown to Enloe Medical Center in Chico, then transferred to the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He remained there in serious condition Tuesday.

The sheriff says no charges will be filed because investigators determined the shooting was accidental.
