Rain and humidity slow 12,000-acre wildfire

ASSOCIATED PRESS

9:38 a.m. October 5, 2008

FORT HUNTER LIGGETT – Rain and humidity are slowing a wildfire that has burned more than 12,000 acres in the Los Padres National Forest along California's central coast.

More than 1,300 firefighters are trying to contain the blaze burning about 20 miles south of King City in Monterey County.

Fire officials say the 19-square-mile blaze burning was 37 percent contained early Sunday. Full containment is not expected until mid-October.

The wildfire that started Sept. 27 is threatening 19 homes and 30 other buildings. So far no structures have been damaged.

One firefighter suffered a broken nose while battling the blaze. Ten other firefighters were treated for minor injuries.
