Robert A. Kittle has been the editorial page editor of The San Diego Union-Tribune since its establishment in 1992 with the merger of The San Diego Union and The Tribune. He writes on a wide range of local, state, national and international issues.
Prior to the merger, he was editorial page editor of the Union. He joined the Union in 1986 as an editorial writer.
From 1977 to 1986, Kittle was an associate editor of U.S. News & World Report in Washington. During that period, he served as the magazine's White House correspondent, Pentagon correspondent and congressional correspondent. He covered Ronald Reagan's 1980 presidential campaign and then moved to the White House assignment from January 1981 until January 1984.
Before joining U.S. News & World Report, Kittle was the Washington bureau chief for the Charleston (W.Va.) Daily Mail. He is a native of West Virginia and was graduated from West Virginia University, where he was editor-in-chief of the Daily Athenaeum.
Kittle, a regular commentator on the PBS "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" also does periodic political commentary on MSNBC and National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." He is a weekly guest on the KPBS radio and television program "The Editors Roundtable."
Kittle and his wife, Luanne, are owners of The Rhoades School for gifted children in Encinitas, Calif. They live in the San Diego neighborhood of La Jolla with their two sons, Andrew and Peter.
