Two San Diego County residents were among a group of four hikers rescued yesterday morning in the Sierra Nevada.
One of the hikers, Phyllis Hall, 62, of Clackamas, Ore., died at a Truckee hospital a short time later, apparently from hypothermia, officials said. The others were cold and hungry but unhurt.
Rescuers found the group on the Pacific Crest Trail near Tinker's Knob in Placer County.
Placer County sheriff's Sgt. Robert Dellinger said the four used a cell phone to call 911 after apparently suffering through a night of cold, rainy weather at more than 8,900 feet above sea level.
Dellinger said the hikers were not lost but apparently had not anticipated the cold weather.
The other hikers were Harold Herlan, 65, of San Diego; Pamela Bryant, 49, of El Cajon; and Karen Lafferty, 58, of Hanford.

Robber fires at employee in liquor store, takes cash
MISSION VALLEY: A robber pointed a gun at three male employees at a liquor store, firing a shot at one who tried to deter him, grabbed some cash and ran to a waiting car early yesterday, police said.
The holdup was reported shortly after 12 a.m. at Valley Liquor on Hotel Circle South.
A robber wearing a blue motorcycle helmet walked into the store. He pointed a black pistol at the employees and demanded money, San Diego police Sgt. Rich Nemetz said.
One clerk tried to knock the gun from the robber's hand. The robber fired at him, missed and took cash from one of the registers. He ran out and left in a newer, four-door, gray Chrysler sedan driven by a woman with blond hair.
The victims described the robber as a white man in his 20s, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 185 pounds and wearing a gray shirt and gray pants.
