WARNER SPRINGS
–
Four people are seeking two Warner Unified school board seats.
Warner Unified, a small district in rural northeast San Diego County, has about 250 students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Its enrollment includes students from the Santa Ysabel and Los Coyotes Indian reservations. The board has five elected trustees.
On the ballot are incumbent Cindy Magill and challengers Tom Grimaldi, a teacher in the San Diego Unified School District; Jenna Peterson, a school administrative assistant; and Melody Sees, a community volunteer.
Here are some of their positions, based on responses to questionnaires:
Grimaldi, 45, said it's time to bring in new leadership to the school board. He said he can bring a teacher's perspective and insight to the table, and that he knows how to focus on the “whole child.” He wants to increase the technology used by the district, accompanied by instruction in classrooms. Grimaldi said the district should be making more academic progress than it has been.
Magill, 51, co-owner of a custom leather and tack repair business, is seeking a fourth term. Student success, she said, is always the key issue.
“I believe that every student deserves an education at Warner that will allow them to compete globally for any career they choose. I believe in teaching our students to be environmentally responsible, to live healthy and to be kind to one another.”

She said she hopes to bring back 100 percent funding of health care for employees, something that has been reduced because of budget cuts.
Peterson did not complete a questionnaire and declined to be interviewed.
Sees, 52, said she believes in the school district and is familiar with its issues, strengths and programs. Sees said she is not employed at this time but is a member of the School Site Council and is adviser to the Warner High School Native Pride Club.
“What I hope to accomplish is to continue making the school district a place where parents want to send their children, a place where students want to learn and teachers want to teach.”
She said she would like to encourage more community involvement.
