Apple Days Festival will begin Saturday

JULIAN: Julian's annual Apple Days Festival will be held this weekend at the Menghini Winery, where there will be plenty to do.

Visitors will be able to view apple displays, participate in children's activities, see gold-panning demonstrations and eat apple pie. There will also be a beer-and-wine garden, contests and musical entertainment.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. Free parking is available at the winery, 1150 Julian Orchards Drive.

In 1907, Julian apples won a prestigious award, the Wilder Medal, from the American Pomological Society, and the town has been celebrating the accomplishment ever since. The celebration is now two months long, until mid-November. For more information, go to julianappledays.com. –L.L.

Council candidates to take questions

VISTA: A community forum for Vista City Council candidates is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Shadowridge Country Club.

Candidates John Aguilera, Gene Ford, Steve Gronke and Frank Lopez, Jr. will explain their stance on issues and take questions from moderator Jim Fraker and the audience.

The forum is sponsored by South Vista Communities and the Shadowridge Owners Association, and the public is welcome. The country club is at 1980 Gateway Drive. –R.R.

Overlook view of lake part of hike

SAN MARCOS: The latest group hike offered by the city of San Marcos will explore the trails north and west of San Elijo Park tomorrow.

Included is an overlook view of Lake San Marcos. The free hike will be moderately difficult. Be prepared to walk about five miles. Walkers will be meeting at 9 a.m. at San Elijo Park, 1105 Elfin Forest Road.

Hikers should bring water and snacks. Minors must be accompanied by adults. Dogs on leashes are welcome. –L.L.

City arts festival set at two outdoor sites

SAN MARCOS: The city's annual arts festival, with art demonstrations, vendor booths and performances by local schools and music groups, will be held Sunday.

The outdoor fair, called San Marcos Alive, will be at the Civic Center and on San Marcos Boulevard between Mission Road and Rancheros Drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Artwork from local students and adults will be on display. Prizes will be awarded to the winners at a reception Sunday.
