The latest from the food scene here in San Diego is filled with all kinds of
good news and tidbits. Here’s an update on the latest and greatest.
Paul McCabe is back at it again at Kitchen 1540, the brand-new restaurant at
L’Auberge Del Mar. The restaurant replaces the former Taylor’s and has had a
dramatic interior makeover, part of the more than $25 million remodel of the
entire resort. Take some time to check out the new place, as it is quite
stunning and McCabe’s menu borders on the incredible. More on that in this
space, soon. Next for the resort is a fabulous new spa. Find it at 1540
Camino Del Mar. Call (858) 259-1515.
Another new kid on the block in North County is Pasquale’s Del Mar (in the
former location of Scalini’s), overlooking the polo fields along Via de la
Valle. Enjoy the marvelous Italian food Pasquale Agnalotti made so popular
in his La Jolla location and sip martinis in the restaurant’s fabulous
Finley Lounge. This place is hip and chic! Call (858) 259-0504.
Patrick Halcewic, owner of the French Market Grill in Rancho Bernardo, has
opened a new place in Banker’s Hill near Balboa Park. It is called Hexagone
and is a gorgeous, sophisticated restaurant offering a tantalizing menu of
classic and contemporary French cuisine, ideal for before-theater dining!
You’ll find it at 495 Laurel (at Fifth). Call (619) 236-1467.
Sam’s Café – a great little restaurant specializing in fish and chips,
breast of chicken and a variety of Middle Eastern specialties such as gyros,
and falafel – has added a hamburger to the menu. Sam’s Café is at 141 Lomas
Santa Fe in Solana Beach. Call (858) 755-3401.
The Broken Yolk is a relative newcomer to the La Costa area of coutheastern
Carlsbad. A huge number of omelets and other breakfast favorites will make
your day. Read all about it in my other column in the back of this Night &
Day.
Watching football this weekend? Consider these great sports-oriented places:
Boston’s Gourmet Pizza, which opened earlier this year at 249 El Camino Real
in Encinitas; and Chief’s Burgers & Brew, located across from the train
station at 124 Lomas Santa Fe in Solana Beach.
